ADDING A RECORD
DESCRIPTION:
A record is simply all the information associated with a person. This may be
address, zip and/or skills. The program comes shipped with dummy records for
user understanding. To enter, delete, or modify a record, choose menu choice
"A" from the main menu.
To find a particular record, type the first letters (or numbers) of the
field you seek and that record will be found. For instance, if you are
looking for a person named "Jones", view by last name and type JONES.
Upon typing "J", the program locates all last names beginning with "J".
The name "JONES" will probably appear after you type "O" or "N". This
method is used frequently throughout the program.

VIEWING SELECTION SCREEN
DESCRIPTION:
This menu allows you to define the method of examining records.
Records in the database have fields where the data is stored. Once data is
present in a field, that field can be used to sort the records. When
a choice is made in this menu, all the records having data in that field
will be listed on the screen in ascending order.
To enter a record, it makes no difference which selection you make in this
menu. Think of this menu as a way of getting an immediate "feel" of all the
records in the database based on ascending order.

DESCRIPTION:
This form allows a single skill to be entered or changed. If a skill already
exists in the skill dictionary, you cannot enter it again. This prevents the
skill dictionary from becoming redundant.
Just type the name of the skill as you want it and hit return. The additional
information including genre and description are optional but are recommended
since they assist in educating users about technical terms and acronyms.

BACKING UP YOUR DATA
DESCRIPTION:
Your data is stored in four separate data files. These are D1.DAT,
D2.DAT, D3.DAT and D4.DAT. The information stored in these files is indexed
automatically and is stored in files that have the extension .K*. D2.K01, for
example, contains the indexed information for D2.QBS.
It is always good protocol to protect your data, and we recommend that you
back up these data and index files periodically. This can be accomplished at
the DOS level, or by using a commercially available disk backup program.
Using DOS, to back up the data files to drive A, type the following:
copy *.DAT A: /V (copies all QBS files to drive A: and verifies)
copy *.K?? A: /V (copies all index files to drive A: and verifies)
In the event of a hard drive crash, these files can then be copied into the
product directory, and used immediately.

DESCRIPTION:
To customize the field names, you must hit ESC to return to the main menu.
From the main menu simply choose the selection "CUSTOMIZE FIELD NAMES".
Having the ability to customize field names gives the user a custom feel and
fit unique to the demands of the user. The fields can be renamed to any name
that is required, even after there is data stored in the program. It is
important to realize, however, that if a field was originally named "first
name" and it is customized to be "part #", then that field will still contain
the same information, or first names. The only difference is that the field
will have a different name. The location and data in that field will not be
changed in any way, so be sure to select your field names carefully before
beginning your data entry.

This screen controls the working environment. On this screen, the first

This password should be written down and stored in a safe place. The next
field allows you to define where the output generated in the program will
four fields control the modem communications.
The port field should be "1" or "2" depending upon which COM port the modem
is configured for. Dial String should contain the command required to dial
a number. For Hayes this is ATDT. Init String should contain the command to
initialize the modem prior to dialing. Hangup string should contain the
command to tell the modem to hang up.
The last field in this screen determines the default search method that will
be used when conducting searches. This default can be controlled during a

PERFORMANCE ISSUES
Data searches and data entry are disk intensive, so a disk cache is
strongly recomended. Many cache utilities are available commercially. It is
important that the cache program uses expanded or extended memory, otherwise
the product will run out of conventional memory.
Basically, the more conventional memory that can be supplied, the better
the product will function. If you examine the memory available option
in "General System Setup" a number will appear indicating how much
RAM is available for program operation. If this number is less than 70,
it is a good idea to upgrade to either DR DOS 6.0 or DOS 5.0, or to examine
the config.sys and autoexec.bat files carefully.
Both of these operating systems offer advice on optimizing your config.sys
and autoexec.bat files to give your programs the maximum amount of memory.

CREATING, MODIFYING, OR DELETING A PRINTER DRIVER
DESCRIPTION:
The product allows you to fine tune or create a printer driver. A printer
driver is simply a low level interface between the product and your printer.
The driver tells the printer exactly how to behave. Subsequently, the output
will look much better.
We have included several popular printer drivers that should satisfy most
printer families. In the event your printer is not listed, you have two
options. 1. Create your own driver, or 2. if your reporting needs are very
demanding, use the CLARION REPORT WRITER.
To create your own printer driver in this screen, you must fill in a grid of
specific printer commands. These commands are available in the back of most
printer manuals. See DRIVER CREATION below for further specifics on this

PRINTER DRIVER HELP
DESCRIPTION:
Driver creation is best described by an example. First, you must have your
printer manual available. At the back of the manual there is usually a page
that lists the decimal commands that correspond to certain printer functions.
The product will only work properly with the decimal commands. Hex and ctrl
commands can not be substituted.
Look for the printer command that will apply BOLD. For the HP laserjets, this
command is 027 069. If you examine the printer driver for the HP laserjet,
you will find that this is indeed true for the HP laserjets. Once you have
found the command that will apply bold, simply enter it in the BOLD row by
typing the numbers.
To type 027 069, you would hit 027 keys in that order. Then hit the down
arrow key to advance to the next block. You would then hit 069. Finally, hit
the down arrow key again to advance a block. Repeat this operation for the
other user definable styles and printer functions.

SEARCHING THROUGH DATA
DESCRIPTION:
You can only search through data once data has been provided. The example
records that come with the product contain an excellent palette of criteria
to use as a practice search. Choose menu choice D to enter the query section
of the program.
There is no limit to how you construct a search. It is possible to search for
any combination of data without having to know SQL or some cryptic query
syntax. A typical query is as easy as filling in the blanks and entering as
many dictionary elements as you wish.
There are two parts to the search entry screen. The first screen performs an
exact match or a best match of the criteria listed. This means that only the
records that contain a combination of the criteria will be located. There is
also an optional screen that allows you to fill in the blanks and incorporate
any < > = operators in a search that pertain to each of the fields in a
record.
